STARS AND STRIPES SINGLES FINALS IN ARCADIA PARK

STARS AND STRIPES SINGLES FINALS IN ARCADIA PARK

Father¹s Day was a great day for two Southwest Division lawn bowlers. It was the finals of the Stars and Stripes Singles Tournament.  The next step for these two winners will be in October in Seattle, Washington for the
U. S. Nationals Championship.   The saga started on the 11th and 12th of
June when 26 lawn bowlers played the opening weekend.  When he next weekend started there were about half still remaining on the 18th and then on the 19th, only 4 bowlers were still rolling their bowls. In the Stars contest, Scott Roberts and Loren Dion and in the Stripes section, Bill Brault and Steve Smith had to do battle. One thing about lawn bowling. Although these four were vying for the title of Champion, no matter which won, they were still great buddies and will face off again in another tournament and the results may be completely different. That¹s the way it is in lawn bowling.
You do your best, work hard and practice long hours, then play your best friend and he or she may demolish you, but you¹re still good friends and will play again soon.

This was a special Father¹s Day for Loren Dion. He won the Stars Division and dedicated the win to his father Tom Dion who was in attendance for his son¹s winning performance. Tom Dion was a great lawn bowler himself and Loren is trying to outdo his dad.  Loren had to defeat Scott Roberts from the Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club for the title "Stars Champion, 2011."

The Stripes Division saw two great bowlers from San Diego battle it out.
Steve Smith finally won the match. He defeated Bill Brault in a close game.
Then they had to share the car ride back to San Diego. Wonder what they talked about on the ride home?  I would imagine Steve wore his 1st place medal all the way home.

Lawn bowling is a challenging sport. It is very easy to learn but no one has ever mastered it. It¹s a low impact light aerobic exercise and is very good for your heart and muscles. Enjoying the sport with your friends is a plus and lawn bowling is a sport that can last you a lifetime.  If you would like more information go to the website <

The Santa Anita Bowling Green Club also provides the three plaques for the winning team on each of the two greens.
The bowlers are divided into two greens. CINCO DE MAYO PAIRS TOURNAMENT

Format for the Floy Torvid tournament is easy. One game of 12 ends, eat lunch and play another game of 12 ends to wrap up the day. It usually starts around 9 AM and on the 5th it was over by 1:30 PM.

Juanita Jones smiling after her win in the Floy Torvid Singles Tournament

THERE WAS A SINGLE WINNER
The Santa Anita Bowling Green Club held their April Floy Torvid Singles Tournament at their facilities in the Arcadia County Park on April 7th.  The Floy Torvid Tournaments are in honor of Mrs. Torvid, a Past President of the club who died in January 1991. The games are held September through June each year. The format is two games of 12 ends each and a break between them for lunch, on the first Thursday of the month.

The singles bowlers numbered twelve this year. Juanita Jones took first place, Shuman Chan 2nd, Sandy Dalzell 3rd, and Marlene Padget 4th.  Others participating were: Houdini Ho, Marinko Tudor, Jim and Mattie Miler, Amy Chan, Bob Hauerwaas, Rose Blennov and Dick Ashmore.

Lawn bowling is a low impact, light aerobic exercise type of sport. In the Singles games, each bowler has four bowls to put into play. In Triples they only use three bowls and in Rinks or Fours only two bowls are used. In a twelve end game you would roll a total of forty-eight bowls. Each bowl weighs three pounds, so you would roll 144 pounds of bowls in a game.
That¹s a fair amount of exercise.  But the sport of lawn bowling has been around in the states since the early 1600¹s and is still the best kept secret in the sporting world. The green at Southampton, England was built in 1299, and is still in use today.

To get the sport more exposure, all of the lawn bowling clubs in Southern California will be holding an Open House on May 7th from 10 AM until 3 PM.  This is a chance to see how the sport is played and it will give you an opportunity to get a lesson and roll some bowls. You just can¹t beat an offer like that partner.  To get more information before May 7th go to:
www.lawnbowling-arcadia.com. And check out our web site. There¹s a lot of information on the sport and the bowlers. But, don't forget May 7th Open House.

After you decide to try lawn bowling call Gene Plunkett at
626-351-5327 for information on how you can get FREE lessons. You can drop by the Open House on May 7th or come by the greens on S. Santa Anita Avenue, just below Huntington in Arcadia Saturday mornings a little before 9 AM and talk to the bowlers and roll a few bowls.  See you on the greens.

CALIFORNIA BEARS COMPETE IN ARCADIA.

The 2011 Southwest Women¹s Division of the Southwest Lawn Bowls Association held their annual California Bears Tournament at the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club greens in the Arcadia County Park in Arcadia on Saturday, the 26th of March.

It was a typical Spring day, sunny going to cloudy and cool. The rain held off until the ladies finished their competition.  "Thank goodness for that" said Tournament Director Izzie Forbes.

The California Bears is a complicated tournament.  There were eight teams of four ladies each. The format was to play "Rinks" or "Fours" first. Four against four. Each bowler only had two bowls. After that game the teams were split asunder. Three members played "Triples" with three bowls each, and the other member played a "Singles" game, using all four bowls.

Following those games each team was divided into "Pairs." Two against two, using four bowls per bowler. The tournament started at nine in the morning and ended just after five in the afternoon. Each game played fourteen ends, which usually runs two hours to complete. All total they played forty-two ends of bowling, and they were pretty well ready to call it a day around five.

The winning team was: Rosa Baer from the Hermosa Beach Lawn Bowling Club, Cathie Herbert from the Santa Ana Lawn Bowling Club, Juanita Jones from the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club, and Anne Nunes of the Newport Harbor Lawn Bowling Club.  Juanita is the newest bowler of the team. Rosa and Ann are winners of many tournaments both in the USA and abroad.

Lawn bowling is an easy sport to learn and can last you a lifetime. If the sport sounds interesting, go to our website:
www.lawnbowling-arcadia.com <http://www.lawnbowling-arcadia.com>  and there you will find much information about the sport and the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club. Another was to get information is to call Gene Plunkett at 626-351-5327 to find out about our free lesson offer. On May 7th, all of the clubs in the Southwest Lawn Bowls Association will be holding an Open House. There will be refreshments, much information and a chance to play the sport to see how easy it is to roll those bowls toward the Jack (target ball). As our motto
says: "Lawn bowling is happy times with good friends." See you on the greens.

Ten teams on each of the Santa Anita¹s greens #3 and #4.  They had to play three games. Two before lunch and one afterwards. This showed up the ones that ate a little too much and got a little groggy in the warm afternoon sun.

When the scores were tallied by the Tournament Director, Izzie Forbes from the Long Beach Lawn Bowling Club, three winners on each green was announced.
The top team on green #3 was Liam Courtney from the Santa Anita Lawn Bowling Club, Ed Quo out of the Newport Harbor LBC, and Linda Roberts from Laguna Beach LBC. The top trio from green #4 was Leonard Wasserman, his son Ryan Wasserman, and Boyce Stringer.  One note of interest was the third place team on green #4. It was  an all Santa Anita team led by Marinko Tudor with Margi Rambo as Vice Captain and Juanita Jones playing Lead. Other Santa Anita Bowlers were: Houdini Ho, Kay Tong, Liam Courtney, former Santa Anita President Bob Schmalholz and Shuman Chan.

This was only one of many lawn bowling tournaments to be held at the Arcadia County Park facilities. Later this month the California Bears Rinks
(4 players per team) and the Katy Stone Singles.  In May the Southwest Division Open. June 4th the City of Hope Benefit tournament. The Santa Anita club also holds club tournaments on Tuesdays, the first Thursday of the month and in July through August, each Thursday they hold a barbecue and a triples tournament afterwards. There¹s always something to keep the bowlers occupied. We are always looking for new members. WHATTA PAIR

The Santa Anita Bowling Green Club held the monthly Floy Torvid Tournament on March 3rd at their beautiful greens in the Santa Anita County Park in Arcadia. It was a great day for bowling. Cool and partly cloudy.

There were eight pairs entered in Thursday¹s event. The Floy Torvid Tournament plays various versions of lawn bowling games each month. This month it was ³Mixed Pairs.²  This means the team can consist of two men, or two women or a man and a women.  The format was to play one 12 end game before lunch and one 12 end game after lunch. The team with the best record of wins and losses takes the money, and the next three places also share a portion of the cash.

When the scores were tallied Irene Mastro and Juanita Jones had two wins, securing first place.  Second place went to Houdini Ho and Bob Hauerwaas.
Third spot was taken by Margi Rambo and Sandy Dalzell.  Fourth place was Shuman Chan and Ray Obazawa (played first game) and Mattie Miller (2nd game).  Other teams were: John Gonzalez and Fred Robles, Jim Miller and Bud Grattan (Bud just joined the club on March 2nd and this was his first experience at bowling in a tournament). Dewey Tse and Al McKeown. Dick Ashmore and Gene Plunkett rounded out the field of competitors.

Lawn bowling first came to the colonies in the early 1600s.  It was a popular sport in England with many kings and queens playing the sport.
Shakespeare, Robert Browning, Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir Frances Drake and other notables played bowling on the green. Walt Disney was an avid bowler and the sport is still one of the best kept secrets of the sporting world

AWARDS RETURN

After 20 plus years some of the trophies and plaques given for lawn bowling achievement have returned to the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club.

Back in the seventies and eighties Michael Wurtz was one of the better bowlers at the Santa Anita club. He won many awards for the different tournaments he entered, and on February 8th his daughter Marge Butterfield and husband Dick returned them per Michael¹s request. There were several trophies and plaques from Michael¹s wife, Mary Dunn.  The trophies and plaques were accepted with much pride by the Santa Anita Bowling Green  Club President, Cheri Cabot.  Michael¹s daughter, Marge, presented Cheri a check in his memory. Michael died last year at the age of 94.

Mrs. Butterfield was given Michael¹s Completition of Training certificate that the club had posted for all to see. Dated November 1973. It had hung in the outside display case for many years and was faded, a little ragged around the edges, and was returned to his daughter to keep with her memories of her dad.
Mike¹s trophies will be on display in the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club Room, along with many other awards.

FALL SINGLES ON A SUMMER DAY.

The Santa Anita Bowling Green Club held their November Floy Torvid Tournament Thursday the 4th at their greens in the Arcadia County Park.

Although it says Fall, it was a warm, bordering on hot day. Bright sunshine with just a hint of a breeze. Just another beautiful day in paradise.

This month's event was Singles.  One on one, can't blame anybody else type of tournament. Two games and the first four place winners took home the money.  There were 12 entrants for the event. First place was taken by Shuman Chan, second was Rose Blennov, Third place Marlene Padget and fourth went to Margi Rambo.

Other bowlers were: Betty Barnett, Marinko Tudor, Gene Plunkett, Mattie and Jim Miller, Sandy Dalzell, Dr. Alex Tse, and his son Dewey Tse. Everyone enjoyed the games, didn't like the heat and said, "wait until next time!"
Hopefully it will be cooler  for the next tournament.

Lawn Bowling is a sport that keeps itself hidden from the glaring spotlight of the major sports. It has been in the colonies since the 1600's when the Brits brought it over. It was banned in England several times since the archers were bowling and not practicing their archery skills. It was reserved for for land owners and nobles, and finally us common folk got to play. Ever since then we've tried to keep it hidden from the public, but word is leaking out that it is a fun sport, easy to learn and it can last you a lifetime. Our motto is "Lawn bowling is happy times with good friends." If you'd like more information about lessons and how to join our band of merry bowlers, call Gene Plunkett at 626-351-5327, or go on line to our website: www.lawnbowling-arcadia.com. We'd love to have you join our band of bowlers and bowlerettes.  See you on the green.

AUSTRALIAN PAIRS ON THE GREEN IN ARCADIA

Thursday, June 10th, the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club Held their June Floy Torvid Tournament, featuring Australian Pairs. Sounds like fun, doesn¹t it?  Teams of two play against other pairs teams for the number one prize. The game is simple. Each bowler has four bowls, so each team has eight total. Your opponents also have eight bowls and the trick is to get closer to the "Jack" or target than the other team. It works like this: First bowler on each team rolls two bowls, then switch ends with the other two bowlers. Those two roll four bowls, and again you switch ends and the first bowlers roll their two final bowls. This continues for twelve ends, and you play one game but walk back and fourth the same as two games. Lots of exercise and its fun trying to remember how many bowls to bowl.  No wonder the Aussies gave the game to the U.S..
Anyway, The Santa Anita bowlers played two games (walked four games
worth) and when everyone was dog tired, Dewey Tse and Marlene Padget won the whole thing. They were the only team to win two games. Everyone else either won one game or lost both games. Who¹s confused?
The others that were bowling in this event were: Jim and Mattie Miller, Ray Obazawa, Sandy Dalzell, Shuman Chan, Marinko Tudor, Irene Brodie, Juanita Jones, Bob Soldier, Bob Hauerwaas and Gene Plunkett.
The usual game of lawn bowls is easy to learn, and in a short time too. If you think you would like to learn this sport call Gene Plunkett at
626-351-5327 and get all the information and arrange for lessons. If you have a computer go to the web site: . You can find a lot of information about the sport and our club. Give it a try and you won¹t be sorry. It can last you a lifetime.

BEARS ROAM THE ARCADIA COUNTY PARK

The Santa Anita Bowling Green Club hosted the Southwest Women¹s Bowling Division of the U. S. Lawn Bowls Association annual "California Bears 4¹s Tournament" on Saturday, March 27th at the Arcadia County Park Lawn Bowling greens in Arcadia.

This tournament has been running since the late 1990¹s and is one of the favorites for the ladies. This year there were eight teams entered. The teams consist of four lawn bowlers. The first game is "Rinks," where each team member plays with only 2 lawn bowls. After that game they break up the teams into two teams. One lady bowls a singles match, and the other 3 team members play a triple game. Then the for ladies divide into "pairs." That¹s two against two.  It takes plenty of stamina to play different games that last for 14 ends.  When they are through they have bowled 56 ends of lawn bowling, which ran from 9 AM until after 4 PM.  That¹s a lot of bowling!

When they had finished the last end, the winners of the Bear Trophy
were: Kottia Spangler from the Riverside Lawn bowling Club. Rosa Baer a Hermosa Beach bowler, Cathie Herbert and Ann Nunes from the Newport Harbor club.

Coming up in a few weeks at the Arcadia County Park greens will be the Southwest Division Open, where there will be over 100 bowlers, both men and women competing for eight days. If you have never seen competitive lawn bowling you should come by the park and watch. Each day starts at 9 AM.

The Santa Anita Bowling Green Club will hold an Open House on May 15th from 10 AM until 3 PM. You can come by, roll a few bowls, have some refreshments and talk to the local team about lawn bowling. It¹s a sport that has been in the USA since the 1600¹s. If you would like to take lessons, call Gene Plunkett 626-351-5327 and find out how you can get FREE lessons. Lawn bowling is a light aerobic sport, easy to learn and can last you a lifetime.          Each month, between September and July, the club holds a lawn bowling tournament to keep the club members bowling sharp in competition.

We all watched Curling in the Olympic games, but did you know that that sport on ice has a cousin on grass? Yup.  Sure does.  You may have heard the terms, Lead, 2nd Lead, Vice and Skip applied to the players. Even the Hog line was mentioned quite often. But hurling a 38-pound chunk of granite down the ice for about 140 feet can get rather tiring, not to mention the frosty tootsies you have to stand on for over an hour.
Being located in Southern California, Curling's cousin, Lawn Bowling is very similar except for the ice, heavy granite rocks and the portion of the course that’s known as “The House.”  We call that the “Head.”  Where you deliver from is called the “Mat end.”
Like Curling, Lawn Bowling started long ago in the British Isles. Scotland, Ireland or England, it doesn’t matter. Kings and Queens played Lawn Bowls; it was banned because the archers were bowling instead of shooting arrows. Even Shakespeare and Walt Disney were bowlers. Of course Sir Francis Drake was playing bowls with Sir Walter Raleigh, when the Spanish Armada came to invade England. Sir Francis told the messenger that when they had finished their game he would attend to the Spanish. This was in 1588.
Lawn Bowls came to the “colonies” around 1615 or there about. The Brits brought it over.  George Washington’s dad built a bowling green at Mount Vernon when George was born, and there is still a bowling green at Williamsburg, still in use.
The major differences in Curling and Lawn Bowling is that in bowling we use “bowls” in stead of a rock. These bowls have a built in bias that makes the bowl curve in one direction. Of course if you want to bowl in the other direction you turn the bowl over.  Instead of a “House” Lawn Bowling has a “Head.” This is where your target is located.  The “Jack.” It’s about the size of a cue ball, and is solid white.  The idea of the game is to get more of your team’s bowls closer to the Jack than your opponents. If you are bowling a single, or a double game, you use four bowls each. A triple team use only three bowls each and for the Rinks game, each of the four bowlers only gets two bowls.
The bowling surface is called a “green” and the alley or “rink” you bowl on is usually around 120 feet long and between 14 and 16 feet wide. A game of triples lasts about two hours.  The sport is easily learned. Many students that never played can be taught enough to get them started I two to three FREE lessons. We have all of the equipment needed and all we really need is interested students.  The bowls weigh about 3 pound each so small children can’t handle them well. Anyone up to the age of 120 that can walk 120 feet at a time, bend over and pick up the bowls and roll them down the rink is surely welcome.
One nice thing about Lawn Bowling is that when it rains or snows, or freezes, we stay home by the fire and watch Curling. If you think you might like to try Lawn Bowling, come by the Arcadia County Park, just south of Huntington Drive on South Santa Anita Avenue and give it a look. Best times are Tuesday morning and Saturday morning at 9 AM. There’s usually a group of happy folks rolling their bowls.  Lessons can be arranged to fit your schedule by calling Gene Plunkett at 626-351-5327. He can give you all the information you’ll ever need. If you have a computer visit our web site at: www.lawnbowling-arcadia.com
.
We have room for about 50 more bowlers in our club, so beat the crowd and come and give Lawn Bowling a try. It’s a lot easier than Curling on ice..Burrrrrrrrrr.  See you on the greens.
