VETERAN/NOVICE TOURNAMENT AT THE ARCADIA COUNTY PARK

The Santa Anita Bowling Green Club hosted the Southwest Women's Division of the U. S. Lawn Bowls Association Veteran/Novice Triples Tournament at the Arcadia County Park on S. Santa Anita Ave, in Arcadia on March 6th. Just before the rains on Saturday.

There were twenty teams entered. In this Vet/Novice format, at least one member of the team must be a lawn bowler that has bowled for less than two years. Once they hit the two-year mark, they become a veteran.

The field of bowlers was divided into two greens of five rinks each. It was a blind draw format, so each Skip picked a score card and the teams you bowled was "the luck of the draw". There were teams from Cambria, San Diego, Riverside, Sun City, Laguna Beach, Newport Harbor, Pasadena, Long Beach and Santa Anita.  Winners were determined on each of the two greens. First through third place finishers came in the money. The rest applauded the winners.

On green One, the team of Patrick Chan, Eva Ho and George Patyo (the Novice) from Laguna Beach finished with three wins. The winning team on green Two was Marinko Tudor, Margi Rambo and John Gonzales (the Novice) from the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club. They also won three games.  The playing format of the event was three games of 12 ends each. An end is when all three bowlers have played their bowls.  Then they start over and repeat the process 12 times.   A game of this many ends usually takes about two hours to complete.

Lawn bowling is an easy sport to learn and many students start playing in regular games after two or three lessons. All you need to play is flat sole shoes, a hat or visor, sunglasses and the desire to play the best-kept secret in the sporting world.  If you think you would like to try this sport, drop by the greens on Saturday mornings at 9 AM and see how it is done. Or, you can call Gene Plunkett at 626-351-5327 and set up free lessons to suit your schedule.

If you have access to the Internet, go to our web site:
www.lawnbowling-arcadia.com <http://www.lawnbowling-arcadia.com> . There you can find out much more information about the nicest sport around. As we say, "Lawn bowling is happy times with good friends."  See you on the greens.

Subject: CURLING on Grass in Arcadia
News Relelase 02-10 SANTA ANITA BOWLING GREEN CLUB
GENE PLUNKETT PUBLICITY

CURLING…ON GRASS IN ARCADIA

We all watched Curling in the Olympic games, but did you know that that sport on ice has a cousin on grass? Yup.  Sure does.  You may have heard the terms, Lead, 2nd Lead, Vice and Skip applied to the players. Even the Hog line was mentioned quite often. But hurling a 38-pound chunk of granite down the ice for about 140 feet can get rather tiring, not to mention the frosty tootsies you have to stand on for over an hour.
Being located in Southern California, Curling's cousin, Lawn Bowling is very similar except for the ice, heavy granite rocks and the portion of the course that’s known as “The House.”  We call that the “Head.”  Where you deliver from is called the “Mat end.”
Like Curling, Lawn Bowling started long ago in the British Isles. Scotland, Ireland or England, it doesn’t matter. Kings and Queens played Lawn Bowls; it was banned because the archers were bowling instead of shooting arrows. Even Shakespeare and Walt Disney were bowlers. Of course Sir Francis Drake was playing bowls with Sir Walter Raleigh, when the Spanish Armada came to invade England. Sir Francis told the messenger that when they had finished their game he would attend to the Spanish. This was in 1588.
Lawn Bowls came to the “colonies” around 1615 or there about. The Brits brought it over.  George Washington’s dad built a bowling green at Mount Vernon when George was born, and there is still a bowling green at Williamsburg, still in use.
The major differences in Curling and Lawn Bowling is that in bowling we use “bowls” in stead of a rock. These bowls have a built in bias that makes the bowl curve in one direction. Of course if you want to bowl in the other direction you turn the bowl over.  Instead of a “House” Lawn Bowling has a “Head.” This is where your target is located.  The “Jack.” It’s about the size of a cue ball, and is solid white.  The idea of the game is to get more of your team’s bowls closer to the Jack than your opponents. If you are bowling a single, or a double game, you use four bowls each. A triple team use only three bowls each and for the Rinks game, each of the four bowlers only gets two bowls.
The bowling surface is called a “green” and the alley or “rink” you bowl on is usually around 120 feet long and between 14 and 16 feet wide. A game of triples lasts about two hours.  The sport is easily learned. Many students that never played can be taught enough to get them started I two to three FREE lessons. We have all of the equipment needed and all we really need is interested students.  The bowls weigh about 3 pound each so small children can’t handle them well. Anyone up to the age of 120 that can walk 120 feet at a time, bend over and pick up the bowls and roll them down the rink is surely welcome.
One nice thing about Lawn Bowling is that when it rains or snows, or freezes, we stay home by the fire and watch Curling. If you think you might like to try Lawn Bowling, come by the Arcadia County Park, just south of Huntington Drive on South Santa Anita Avenue and give it a look. Best times are Tuesday morning and Saturday morning at 9 AM. There’s usually a group of happy folks rolling their bowls.  Lessons can be arranged to fit your schedule by calling Gene Plunkett at 626-351-5327. He can give you all the information you’ll ever need. If you have a computer visit our web site at: www.lawnbowling-arcadia.com <http://www.lawnbowling-arcadia.com> .
We have room for about 50 more bowlers in our club, so beat the crowd and come and give Lawn Bowling a try. It’s a lot easier than Curling on ice..Burrrrrrrrrr.  See you on the greens.

MARGI RAMBO PLAYING IN A TRIPLES TOURNAMENT

TRIPLES TOURNAMENT AT THE ARCADIA COUNTY PARK

The Santa Anita Bowling Green Club held their Mixed Triples Tournament on February 4th at their greens in the Arcadia County Park.
The weather started out sunny but gradually changed to mostly cloudy, but no rain. The Santa Anita club holds their Floy Torvid Memorial Tournaments each month, September through June. Each month there is a different game of lawn bowls. Singles, doubles and triples are the normal format.  The triples tournament was mixed. Meaning both men and women, since there is no difference in the rules for men and women.
Winning the two game event was the team of Dick Ashmore, Dewey Tse and Tom Ly. Tom was visiting from the Alhambra Lawn Bowing Club.  Second place honors went to the Mattie Miller, Jim Miller and Elvie Powell team.
Ashmore's team won two games and had a plus point score of "Plus 6". Jim Millerıs team also won two games but only had a Plus point score of "Plus 3".
Third place money went to Shuman Chan, Steve Dowd, and Al McKeon. Al is a newcomer to the sport of lawn bowling and has only been bowling A few months.
Other teams that didn't place were:  Margi Rambo's team members were Sandy Dalzell and Bill Powell;  Betty Barnett's team members were John Gonzales and Gene Plunkett.
Houdini Ho's team consisted of Bob and Marian Hauerwaas.  Some bowlers only played one game. They were: Bill Powell, Gayle Plunkett, Ray Obazawa, and Hazel Stevens.
Lawn bowling is a simple game. There is a white ball about the size of a cue ball. This is the target. Each team tries to get all of their bowls closer to the white ball, or Jack, than their opponent. When all the bowlers have bowled their bowls, that is called an "end." Most games consist of 12 or 14 ends.  Whoever has the most points at the end of the 12 or 14 ends is the winner. As with the Triples on the 4th of February. The top two teams won both games and their "plus points" determined the winner. Those points are calculated by taking the difference between your scores and your opponents. If you won a game by the score of 10 to 6, then you would have 4 plus points. If your second game score was 15 to 8, then you would have a plus score of plus 7. So for the two games played you would have two wins and a plus score of 11. The plus points can determine your finishing position in a tournament.
If you would like to learn this sport, all you need are flat sole shoes (no heels), a hat or visor and some sun block. We will furnish everything else. The lessons are free and it doesn't take too many lessons before you're out bowling with the other club members.  All you have to do is call Pat Chiechi at 626-287-8114 or Gene Plunkett at 626-351-5327. They can answer your questions and set up those free lessons. If you have a computer you can get a lot of information by going to the Santa Anita website. It is <
http://www.lawnbowling-arcadia.com> .  There is a lot of information for you there. The days are getting warmer and longer and lawn bowling is just waiting for you to get involved. See you on the greens.

June 6th, the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club held itıs 39th annual City of Hope Mixed Triples Tournament on their greens at the Arcadia County Park in Arcadia. This is a fundraiser for the City of Hope that the lawn bowlers put on each year. Last year there were only 14 teams entered, but this year there were 22 teams for a total of 66 bowlers.

The Santa Anita Bowling Green Club just hosted the Southwest Division Open Tournament May 28th through the 4th of June. Itıs been a busy couple of months for the club and the greens.

The City of Hope triples tournament consist of three ten end games and is divided into A and B greens. The A green has 12 teams and the B green had 10 teams. Only the top scoring team on each green gets a plaque for their efforts. Each bowler has to pay a minimum of $20.00 or more to enter the tournament, and all of the money collected is given to the City of Hope.

SOUTHWEST WOMEN COMPETE FOR THE CALIFORNIA BEAR TROPHY

It was a warm spring day at the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club as 25 ladies from the Southwest Women’s Division took to Green Number three in the Arcadia County Park. By the time the day was over, they had endured an afternoon temperature of 100 degrees, Played one game of Rinks, a split game of Triples and Singles, and ended up with a Pairs game to cap off the day.  Each of the six teams was comprised of four ladies. After the first game of Rinks (4 bowlers on a team, using only 2 bowls). The teams were split into a Triple and a Single game (triples use 3 bowls and the singles uses 4 bowls. After all that fun, the teams were split into 2 pair teams. You might say, there was a whole lot of bowling goin’ on.
After the first game the ladies broke for lunch. The Santa Anita Club provided tea, lemonade, coffee and other “goodies” for the ladies to enjoy with their lunches they brought from home. The kitchen guru, Gayle Plunkett, kept things cold and even served 2 dozen deviled eggs, which didn’t last very long.  Then after lunch the Tournament Director, Izzie Forbes got the ladies rolling again.  They started at nine in the morning and ended just about four in the afternoon. Needless to say the 100-degree temperatures took its toll, but everyone made it to the end.
Although the event was held at the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club, nearly all of the bowlers were from other clubs around Southern California.  The winning team was made up of Cecile Langevin from the Long Beach Lawn Bowling Club. Evelyn Tiel from Sun City LBC, Verna Wallace from Hemet and Jo Mumma from Riverside LBC.

LAWN BOWLERS HOLD MIX PAIRS TOURNAMENT

Thursday, May 7, 2009, the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club held their Mixed Pairs Tournament at their greens in the Arcadia County Park in Arcadia, California.  It was a clear and rather warm day, but the bowlers started at 9:00 AM and ended around 1:00 PM. After two 12 end games.

There were six teams entered in the Floy Torvid Tournament.  This is a monthly event honoring the late Floy Torvid, President of the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club when she died.  The tournament is held the first Thursday of the month, from September through June, and each month is a different type of game.  From singles, pairs, triples, and variations in those games keep the bowlers active and since they do not know whom they will be bowling with, it makes for some very interesting combinations of styles and abilities on each team.

The Pairs Tournament held on the 7th ended up with two teams tying for first place. A rather unusual finish. The first place teams had a total of two wins and six plus points each.  Plus points are the difference between your score and your opponents. For example, if you win a game by the score of 10 to 5, then you have five plus points. If you lose a game by the score of 10 to 5, then you have a minus five plus points.  This time the two teams tying for first were: Dick Ashmore of San Gabriel and Gene Plunkett of Pasadena. The other team was Margi Rambo of Sierra Madre and Marlene Padget of Arcadia.  The third place team was led by Jim Miller of Pasadena and his other teammates, Elvie Powell of San Gabriel in the first game and the second game player was Bob Hauerwaas of Arcadia.

Other entrants were:  Houdini Ho and Bill Surace, Don King and Shuman Chan, Steve Dowd and Mattie Miller. These teams ended up with either a one win and one loss or two losses.  Everyone had a great day of bowling and as the club motto says: ³ Lawn bowling is Happy times with good friends.²

If you would like to learn to lawn bowl, itıs easy as can be, and only takes a few lessons to be skilled enough to play in the regular club sessions and tournaments.  Lawn bowling is a low impact, light aerobic exercise, and is more mental than physical and the rules for the ladies are the same as they are for the men. If you think you can handle the free lessons, give Pat Chiechi at 626-287-8114 or Gene Plunkett at 626-351-5327 a call and get all the information to get going.  If you have a computer and access to the internet, go to the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club web site:

SINGLES- LAWN BOWLING STYLE

Thursday the 2nd of April was the Santa Anita Bowling Green Clubıs Singles Tournament. It was held at their greens in the Arcadia County Park in Arcadia.  The day started out cloudy but the sun broke through around noontime, as the bowlers were finishing up for the day. The usual format for the Floy Torvid Tournament is to play one game starting at 9 AM and then have lunch and finishing up the event by rolling another game.  With singles, the games move quickly enough so that the first game ended before 10:30. The bowlers took a fifteen minute break and then played the second game, saving lunch for when the games were completed, shortly after noon.
There were twelve bowlers participating. In a two game match, Plus points determine the winners. There were four individuals with two wins each, so the difference between your score and your opponentıs score determines the number of Plus Points you receive and your placing in the event.
Taking first place prize money was Shuman Chan with two wins and 18 plus points.  Second place was Houdini Ho with two wins and 11 plus points. Third place went to Gene Plunkett with two wins and 9 plus points and rounding out the top four was Margi Rambo proudly sporting two wins and eight plus points.
Other bowlers were Dewey Tse, Jim and Mattie Miller, Doralyn Clauson, Steve Dowd, Dick Ashmore, Bill MacFarland, John Gonzales and Marinko Tudor. Yes thatıs thirteen total, but Bill MacFarland was a fill in bowler.
The Santa Anita Bowlers hold tournaments each month, September through June. The game for May will be mixed doubles. One man and one lady on each team. Lawn bowling is an equal opportunity sport. The rules are the same for the ladies and gentlemen. There are events just for men and just for the ladies and co-ed events.
Lawn bowling is a low impact aerobic type exercise. Great for those that have had to slow down their athletic activity due to age or injury. A game last about two hours.  You walk just over one-quarter mile and lift a total of 125 pounds if you play fourteen ends and pick up your three pound bowls each end.
The Santa Anita Bowling Green Club has two instructors that are just standing around waiting form someone to come and want to learn to bowl. If you would like to try this sport, give Pat Chiechi 626-287-8144 or Gene Plunkett 626-351-5327 a call and make arrangement for your free lessons. THE AUSSIES ARE HERE, THE AUSSIES ARE HERE.

Well, almost, anyway. The Santa Anita Bowling Green Club held their Floy Torvid Tournament for March, and the game was Australian Pairs. A nifty game of bowls that pits two teams against each other. Australian Pairs is played differently than most bowls games. Usually you have a Vice and a Skip. Which equates to a Captain and a mate. In this version of pairs play, each bowler gets to play both positions.

The Vice, or first to bowl, rolls two bowls. The Skip, or second to bowl, is at the other end of the green, so the Skip and Vice change ends. Now the Skip rolls four bowls. When both Skips are done, they change ends again with the Vice, and the Vice rolls their last two bowls. That completes one end of play. The Skip tallies the score, then assumes the Vice position and it all starts again. Roll two bowls, then change ends, roll 4 bowls, change ends and roll 2 bowls to complete play for that end. This goes on for 12 ends. You could look at it this way. Itıs like walking two games in one game.

The Santa Anita Bowlers could only muster six teams due to illness and important meetings, and when the dust had settled the winners were announced.

Taking first place money was the team of Steve Dowd (Pomona) and Marlene Padget (Arcadia). They had two wins and a plus 27 in Plus Points These are the difference between your score and your opponents score. Sometimes a winner is determined by these points. The Second Place money went to Houdini Ho (San Gabriel) and Bill MacFarland (Temple City). Houdini and Bill had two wins and 22 Plus Points. Both teams scored big over their opponents.

Rounding out the top three money winners was the team of Shuman Chan (Duarte) and Hazel Stevens (Arcadia). Hazel played only one game and Doralyn Clauson Finished the contest. This team ended up with one win and one loss and only 1 Plus Point. Everyone played well, enjoyed the day and they are looking forward to next monthıs games.

In case you are looking for an inexpensive sport to fill your free time. We have just the thing for you. Itıs called Bowls. Lawn Bowls, or bowling on the green. Itıs a low impact, light aerobic exercise, and you meet and play with the nicest people around the area. We have instructors, equipment and all you have to provide is the desire to play the sport. A game takes around 2 hours to complete. You walk about a half-mile during the game and you roll your three-pound bowls 42 times during a triples game, 56 times during a singles or pairs game. It gives you an easy workout and uses up enough energy to make you sleep well at night.

If you think you would like to try the sport of Lawn Bowling, give Gene Plunkett (626)351-5327 or Pat Chiechi (626)-287-8114 a call and they can give you all the information you will ever want to know about the sport of Lawn Bowling. See you on the greens. Like our motto says: Lawn Bowling is Happy Times With Good Friends.

LAWN BOWLERS BEAT THE RAIN

The Santa Anita Bowling Green Clubıs Triples Tournament wound up last Thursday , just as the clouds were starting to let loose with the expected rain.  The bowlers packed up and headed for cover before the prize money was awarded.

The February 5th Triples Tournament is part of the ongoing Floy Torvid Tournament held each month, September through June, in honor of their late president. Each month the game changes from triples to doubles, pairs, and singles.  They try to encourage bowlers to come out and sharpen their bowling skills as often as possible. Besides normal open bowling, they have Bowler of the Month on Tuesdays and Bowling for Bucks on Saturday mornings for those that work during the week.

The format for the Floy Torvid Tournament is to play one 12 end game in the morning, starting at 9:00 AM, then break for lunch and play another 12 end game after lunch. Last Thursday's winning team was led by Team Captain Bob Hauerwaas (Arcadia), Mattie Miller (Pasadena) and John Gonzales (South El Monte). They won both games of the match.

The team in second place with one win and one loss and a Point total of +1, was headed by Jim Miller (Pasadena), Shuman Chan (Duarte) and Chuck Browning (San Gabriel).  Third place was another one win and one loss team, but they didnıt have any Plus Points. The Skip was Don King (Arcadia), Ray Obazawa (Sierra Madre) and Doralyn Clauson (Temple City).
Rounding out the competing teams was the fourth place trio of Houdini Ho (San Gabriel), Gene Plunkett (Pasadena), and Dewey Tse (Monterey Park). They had two losses.
Houdini kept yelling, Next Time! as he left the green.

Lawn bowling is a challenging sport. Itıs a healthy sport and it combines light aerobic exercise with bending, to pick up the bowls, rolling the bowls to the other end of the green, and walking about 120 feet each end. A 14 end game would be a walk of about one quarter mile, and would last about two hours.  The sport is really easy to learn, and lessons are available by calling Gene Plunekett at 626-351-5327 or Pat Chiechi at 626-287-8114. They can give you all the information about the sport, set up a time and day for a lesson and all you need is flat sole shoes (no heels), sun block a hat or visor and sun glasses if you like. The club will provide everything else.  Men and women play the same rules so thereıs only one set to learn, and the bowls come in different sizes to fit your hand. If you bowled every session for one year it would come to about 42 cents per session. Club dues and green fees run $115.00 per year. Try that on the golf course.  Give Gene or Pat a call and get started in the best kept secret in the sporting world. Lawn bowling.
See you on the greens.

LADIES TAKE FIRST PLACE IN THE PAIRS TOURNAMENT

January 8th the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club held their first tournament of the New Year at their greens in the Arcadia County Park in Arcadia. It was a typical beautiful day for bowling as the eight contestants took the field, or should we say, takes the green?

The format was two 14-end games, with the first three places taking the money. There were three ladies and five men bowlers, and a blind draw selected the teams. Thatıs the way the Floy Torvid Pairs Tournament was set up, so you did not know which bowler would be your partner.

The first game started at nine that morning and the second game began after a half hour lunch break. Pairıs games are played with four bowls for each player. Singles games are also played with four bowls, triple games are played with only three bowls and if you play Rinks or four bowlers on each team, you only get to use two bowls.

After the second game was over and the scores checked, the only two-lady team of Margi Rambo from Sierra Madre and Doralyn Clauson from Temple city had won both games. The second place duo was a co-ed team of Houdini Ho from San Gabriel and Mattie Miller of Pasadena winning one game and losing one. Third place was Gene Plunkett from Pasadena and Bob Schmalholz who now lives in San Clemente. The last place team didnıt win any of their games, but gave it the old college try. That was the team of Marinko Tudor of Arcadia and Dewey Tse of Monterey Park.

The sport of lawn bowling came to the colonies in the early 1600ıs. The popularity of the sport rose and fell through the years, and at one time the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club had over 200 members. Now we have 59. We are looking for interested men and women. No experience is necessary. Lawn bowling is the best kept secret of the sporting world. Itıs a low impact light aerobic exercise. The bowls weigh three pounds and come in sets of four. The games usually last about two hours, which will give you enough exercise to get you tired, and able to sleep well. Itıs really easy to learn, and it will last you a lifetime. The age limits are from around 12 to 110. Men and women all play by the same rules and can either bowl in men only or women only matches or mixed matches where men and women play on the same team. Everybody starts the same, as a Novice. After two years of experience you become a Veteran. Itıs a fun sport. Competitive but friendly and you meet the nicest people. The motto of our club is Lawn bowling is happy times with good friends.

If you would like to learn this great sport, give Gene Plunkett a call at 626-351-5327 or Pat Chiechi a ring at 626-28-8114 and they can give you all the information you ever wanted to have about lawn bowling. If you have a computer and can get on line, go to our web site and browse around. That address is: <http://www.lawnbowling-arcadia.com> Hope to see you on the greens.
