CITY OF HOPE       

   It was another successful event.  We started out with 28 teams, the maximum, but lost 2 teams due to illness and some other cause. Then on the day of the tournament, one team couldn’t make it because of a previous injury. We were lacking one team on the “A” green. Luckily, we had three warm bodies, Ray Aston, Bob Soldier and Al McKeown standing around wanting to play. Unfortunately they had to play on the “A” green with the seasoned bowlers. Their win loss was 1 and 2. This aligned with the stars and everybody played, and no injuries.  We didn’t have any first place teams, but on the “A” Green the winners were Izzie Forbes and Maryna and Ivan Hyland. On the “B” Green the winners were Bob Beck, Scott Roberts and Ryan Neptune from Laguna Beach LBC. They each got a framed certificate for their efforts.  This was the 40th City of Hope Tournament, and the ladies from “Together for Hope” brought a lovely cake with a 40th theme. The really nice thing was we raised $4040.00 for the City of Hope. Gayle wants all who helped, contributed and supported our effort to know how much she appreciated everything “yall” did. Thanks a million! Let’s hope next year will be better.

NEW MEMBERS:

   This spring we have been lucky and had 5 new members join our club.  Bob Soldier from LA, Cheri Cabot from San Gabriel, Maria Sheridan from Pasadena, Kay Tong from Temple City and Dick Bokamper a resident of San Clemente.  When you see these fine bowlers, make them feel at home and show how much we care about their bowling.

 

BARBECUE TIME

  Starting next month, on the 8th of July, we go into our barbecue mode. Again, we insist you sign up for each week’s event. The cooks will only be cooking for the number of hot dogs and hamburgers indicated on the signup roster posted on the clubhouse locker door each week. If you don’t sign up there won’t be any dogs or burgers for you. AGAIN.SIGN UP OR YOU DON’T EAT. The happy times will start at 5 PM and our yearly “Bowling for $$$$” starts shortly after finishing the eating portion of the evening. It may be before 6:30 PM so get there early. We will still have the $$$$ for first, second and third places for the evenings bowling ($24, $18, and $12 for 1 through 3rd place. When you sign up for the barbecue indicate if you will be bowling or not. We expect the cost of the barbecue to be $3.00 per person.


GOT BOWLS?

   We’re still looking for small sized bowls. If you have a set, either donate or sell them to the club, we need your help finding these small sizes.  We still do not know what happened to our size 00 training bowls. Any ideas? Let Jim Miller know.

 

DARK FOR SUMMER

   For those of you that are new to the club, and for those that forget things, we will, as they say in Vegas, “go dark” for the summer. Some things will be canceled, and as you can see on the second page of this newsletter, there won’t be any HOGLINES for July, August, and September.  The next one will be on the 30th of September.  We will not have the Floy Torvid monthly tournament, and  if you take a close look at the 2nd page you will see how the local events have been grouped to save space so we can get three months of schedules on one page. The Bowler of the Month, Bowling for Bucks and the Barbecue have their dates behind the titles.  The other events at other clubs are all there, plus the birthdays for the three months.

   Lets keep bowling during the summer and get to the barbecue each Thursday and have FUN. If you are traveling during the summer please be careful and come home safe.

ENTERTAINMENT

   Marian Hauerwaas has arranged for a speaker from the arboretum to give us a whimsical look at the plant world. The topic is: “Legend, Lore and More, The Plant World from A to Z.” Hope you enjoy it.

 

SWD OPEN

   We have to thank Marinko, John G, and Jim Miller and crew for setting up and closing up the greens each day. Gayle kept the kitchen humming and had Marian H., Elvie and the crew turning out the good eats, with Marlene ordering the sandwiches for the hungry hoard. Also thanks to you who did any assistance in any manner. We did it again. Only one major accident this year. Connie Melton broke his right leg in two places when he tried to ski down the hill on the south side of the clubhouse. He’ll be back in action in about two months. Hopefully this accident will speed up the request for steps in that area where bowlers climb.



NEW MEMBER

  The day before the opening of the Southwest Division Open we added another soul to our group. His name is ROBERT SOLDIER, from L.A.. He rolls a pretty good bowl, so welcome him to our family of bowlers.

 

OPEN HOUSE

  We held our annual Open House on the 15th of May. There were 28 that signed in, but it looked like more. We showed them how to bowl, eat hot dogs and peaked their interest in our sport. Several visitors showed a lot of interest and may start training in a week. We had two new sign ups that day: MARIA SHERIDAN of Pasadena and CHERI CABOT from San Gabriel. Lets welcome them and make them feel at home. Thanks to all our club members that helped.

 

THE CITY OF HOPE

   The City of Hope Triples will be on the 5th of June. We hope you will donate as much as you can. Be sure to return your form to


Gayle ASAP, along with your check. We should have a great turnout this year, so if you are planning to bowl get your team together and turn in their names. Checks made payable to City of Hope. NOT TO THE CLUB.  Get a team together, and enter. If you do not have a team let Gayle know and she can set you up with other lone wolf types. Remember to give as much as you can, it’s for a good cause on the 5th. So far we have over 20 teams entered.

 

MISSING BOWLS

   The club’s Training Bowls size “00” are missing. These bowls are for training, NOT for personal use. If you have been in the club for a month or so, you should find bowls to purchase. If anyone knows where these bowls are please let one of the club officers know. Return training bowls to the bowls locker after you use them. They are for beginners to use. Training bowls are not for sale to anyone.
